I started my career at a Residential Treatment Center that was much more behavioral and "in your face." I worked to create a different paradigm on my caseload of girls and worked to have a much more relational focus. I am grateful for that early experience. I got some good training and began the process of creating a different kind of residential treatment that was much more nurturing. I would not want to go back to those old ways but, again, I am grateful for what I learned in that very different system.
While at that RTC I got to work with a young lady with some issues around self-image, communication, and anger. She also had a significant eating disorder that almost took her life. Working with this young lady, I will call her "Maddy," was alternately painful and exhilarating. We made some nice strides but Maddy could be emotionally abusive and destructive at times. All of us caring for her kept at it and after a year and a half or so Maddy was ready to go home. She went home but it did not go well. Lots of old coping mechanisms came out. We tried a tune-up at the RTC with mixed results. Finally, Maddy went to a therapeutic boarding school for another year. After graduating from there Maddy had some more struggles but they were smaller.
Maddy went to college and began to excel. She had a problem with a lousy boyfriend but continued to grow and mature. She really hit her stride. Now 22, Maddy and I connect every so often. She just sent me an email a week ago. For me, it is inspiring. This young lady is phenomenal and doing wonderful things. With her permission I have deleted identifying information and am posting that email. Here you go:
It looks as though the past year or so has been extremely productive for you! I just checked out CALO's website and noticed that things seem to be growing and changing very rapidly!
As the summer is winding down (at least for me) I've been trying to get everything in order for the next year, and I thought it would be nice to shoot you an email and let you know how things are going.
Quite a few big changes have occurred in the last year. On December 29th, Brad and I got engaged after a little over a year of dating. We are getting married next summer July 24, 2010 in Indianapolis, IN.
In May, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baxter College with a BA in Exercise Science. I've spent the summer working random jobs here and there and planning for the wedding next year and things this fall.
Next week Brad and I will be driving cross-country with a packed car to San Jose, California where I'll be starting law school in mid-August. I'm enrolled at University of __________ School of Law. Brad will be staying here in Indianapolis, where he works for an aviation firm, either until he can find a job in San Jose or until I graduate depending on his opportunities at his current job.
While the summer has been very stressful with all these big changes occurring I can say that I am extremely happy with where things are going in my life and feel great!
I hope you and your family are doing well! Please feel free to email me back at firstname.lastname@example.org (I use that email more regularly but thought you would probably recognize this one from previous correspondence). I'm sure you're extremely busy with your family and CALO but I'd love to hear from you.
